Over the years, the word ”mass-customized” has been defined in various ways, including “striking the balance between utility and complexity” and, more to the point, “combining volume efficiency with individual precision”. Wikipedia suggests: Mass customization is a marketing and manufacturing technique that combines the flexibility and personalization of custom-made products with low unit costs.”
It is being applied or strived for in many areas, from education to product development, supply chain management and manufacturing.
When a marketing department offers customized products), it usually means thatsimilar variants of the same mass-produced item are available. In the digital world,“mass-customization” usually does not offer an alternative to mass productionof material goods.
In marketing, there are few examples, and even fewer success stories worth mentioning. Until very recently, the technology to do it right was simply not there.
