A buyer types "used Land Rovers near me" into Google. Instead of a page of blue links, they see a row of real cars for sale nearby, each with a photo and a price. They tap one and land on that car's page on a dealer's website. If that dealer is you, you've just met a buyer at the exact moment they're looking.
That's what Google vehicle ads do. This guide covers how they work, where they're available, what you need to run them, and the mistakes that get ads rejected.
Most of the car-buying journey now happens before anyone walks into a showroom. Cox Automotive's 2024 Car Buyer Journey study found US buyers spent 14 hours shopping for their last vehicle. 7 hours 13 minutes of that was spent researching and shopping online, while only 2 hours 54 minutes was spent at the dealership.
Google reported a similar picture when it launched vehicle ads, with 89% of new car buyers researching their vehicle online.
With that much of the journey happening on screens, being visible where buyers search matters more than ever.

What are Google vehicle ads?
Google vehicle ads are a Google ad format built for car retail. When someone searches for something like "Land Rover Defender near me", Google can show a row of real vehicles for sale nearby. Each listing shows a photo of the car alongside details such as make, model, price, and mileage. Dealers run these ads by connecting a vehicle data feed to Google Merchant Center and linking it to a Performance Max campaign in Google Ads.
The key difference from a standard search ad is where the click goes. A normal ad usually sends people to a homepage or a stock list. A vehicle ad sends the buyer straight to the page for the exact car they tapped on, where they can call you, send an inquiry, or book a test drive.
Google says a campaign with only a vehicle data source shows vehicle ads on Google Search. Display placements are rolling out gradually, currently in Australia, Canada, Japan, and the US.
The early results were strong. During Google's beta, advertisers who added vehicle ads to their existing Search campaigns saw an average 25% increase in conversions.
Where are Google vehicle ads available?
If you sell cars in the US, Canada, Australia, or Japan, you can run Google vehicle ads today. Dealers in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands can too, though the format is in open beta there, and Google has to approve your account before you can switch it on.
Google started small. Vehicle ads launched in the US in 2022, and Google has been switching them on market by market ever since. The last year has been the busiest yet, with France and the Netherlands opening up in August 2025, followed by Spain, Italy, and Germany in March 2026. Google’s help center currently lists all of these markets, along with the UK, as open beta.
For dealers in these European markets, beta cuts both ways. Google may still change the rules and features before a full launch. But the format is new, so dealers who get their feed and photos right now will be ready to move the moment it’s fully released.

How do you set up Google vehicle ads?
To set up Google vehicle ads, you need two Google tools: Merchant Center, which holds your stock data, and Google Ads, which runs the campaign. Google's setup steps are:
- Turn on the vehicle ads add-on in Google Merchant Center
- Link your Merchant Center account to Google Ads and to your Google Business Profile
- Upload your vehicle inventory feed to Merchant Center
- Create a Performance Max or Shopping campaign in Google Ads that uses that feed
The feed is where most of the work sits. Each car needs core details, including make, model, year, price, mileage, VIN, and a store code that matches your dealership location. New cars also need an MSRP in some markets, including the US and Australia. In Spain, Italy, Germany, and France, used cars must include the date of first registration, or they'll be rejected.
The feed also has to stay accurate. Every time a car sells or a price changes, the feed needs to change too.
What are Google's image requirements for vehicle ads?
Google vehicle ad photos need to show the whole car, with nothing added on top. Google's image guidelines can disapprove ads for:
✔ Watermarks
✔ Logos or text placed on top of the photo
✔ Placeholder images, such as "coming soon" graphics or stock photos of a different car
✔ Photos that cut off part of the vehicle
Other things aren't banned outright but can hurt performance, including dealer branding in the background and cluttered backgrounds. Google recommends a clean main image of the whole car, taken from the front at roughly a 45-degree angle. Images need to be at least 500 x 500 pixels, and Google recommends 1500 x 1500 pixels or larger with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
This is where many dealers get stuck. Most showroom photos aren't shot or edited to this standard, and fixing them car by car takes time nobody has.

Why do Google vehicle ads get rejected?
Many Google vehicle ad rejections come down to the feed and the website not matching. Google’s vehicle ads policies set out requirements like these:
✔ Price mismatches. The price in your feed must exactly match the price on your vehicle page.
✔ Broken or wrong links. Each ad must link to a working page for that specific car.
✔ Inaccurate mileage. Mileage must match between your feed and your website.
✔ Missing details. Required attributes such as the image link or availability are left out.
✔ Store code errors. The store code in your feed doesn't match your business location.
Feeds and websites drift apart whenever stock changes. When stock changes daily, keeping them aligned by hand is hard to sustain.
What makes car buyers click on a vehicle ad?

Image quality drives the first click: 87% of online car shoppers said they would click on a clear, well-lit photo over a blurry or poorly framed one.
Accurate stock keeps that click from going to waste. CDK Global's research with 1,300 car buyers found that more than 70% checked a dealer's inventory online to see whether a vehicle was actually on the lot. Among buyers who started their purchase online, 88% said seeing vehicle photos on the dealer's website prompted them to take the next step.
Should dealers use Meta and TikTok as well?
Yes, if you want to reach buyers earlier. Google vehicle ads reach buyers who already know what they want. Social platforms reach them earlier, often before they've settled on a make or model. The strongest strategy uses both, so the car a buyer discovered on their phone is waiting for them when they search.
Meta
Video ads built from your stock can run across Meta's apps. Buyers scrolling their feed see real cars from your showroom, with the price and details that matter to them.

TikTok
TikTok has become a serious research tool for car buyers. Among car shoppers on TikTok, 80% used the platform to research vehicles and 75% used it to discover them. 81% said TikTok increased their interest in brands they hadn't known about or considered.
"This research reinforces what we see every day on TikTok: vehicle buying has become a cultural, community-driven experience. TikTok has become a place where automotive inspiration, understanding, and decision-making naturally come together."

How can dealers automate Google vehicle ads?
Dealers can automate much of the work behind Google vehicle ads with a platform that builds the images and keeps the feed in sync with their stock. Phyron’s Inventory Ads is built to do both, so your team doesn’t have to fix photos or update the feed car by car.
Inventory Ads is part of the Phyron platform. It takes your vehicle photos and stock data and turns every car in your showroom into its own ready-to-run ad. You don't brief a designer, and you don't rebuild anything when a price changes.
It helps to be precise about what the product is. Inventory Ads creates the ads themselves and keeps them in sync with your inventory. Think of it as the creative engine behind your ad campaigns, kept current on every sync with your stock data, without anyone on your team rebuilding a thing.
For Google, Inventory Ads supplies the enhanced images and a hosted vehicle feed, while your team or agency runs Merchant Center and the campaigns in Google Ads.
The product comes in tiers, so you choose the channels that suit your market. You can start with one channel and add more as you see results.
✔ No design work. Your inventory becomes clean, Google-ready images automatically.
✔ Prices that keep up. Drop a price for a weekend promotion and the ad updates on its own. Nobody has to log in to Google and edit listings by hand.
✔ Sold cars disappear. When a car sells, it stops showing. Buyers don't waste a click on a car you no longer have.
✔ Clicks land on the car. Google vehicle ads send the buyer straight to that vehicle's page on your website. They see the car they clicked on, with your contact details right there.

Why use one feed for every channel?
Without a single system, each channel becomes its own job. Someone builds the Meta creative, someone else resizes it for TikTok, and another person maintains the Google feed. Every price change has to be made several times over.
It’s best to use platforms that receive your inventory through your data feed or API, and use that same data to drive the ads on every channel you've chosen. Change a price in your stock system, and the change flows through on the next sync.
That consistency matters to buyers too. A buyer who sees a car on TikTok and then searches for it on Google should find the same car at the same price. When the details match, trust builds. When they don't, buyers move on to the next dealer.
“A buyer who searches for a car should see that exact car, at the right price, the moment they look. Google vehicle ads make that possible, but only if your photos and stock data follow Google’s rules every single day, and any mismatch can get a vehicle rejected. That’s a lot to ask of a busy dealer team.
We built Inventory Ads so dealers don’t have to choose between doing it properly and doing it at all. Your stock goes in, and Google-ready images and an up-to-date feed come out, refreshed as your stock changes. And because every car shows up the same way in every channel and for every dealership, you get true brand alignment across your whole operation.”

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Google vehicle ads and regular search ads?
Vehicle ads show a photo of the car with details such as price and mileage, and the click goes straight to that car's page on your website. A regular text ad usually sends buyers to a homepage or stock list.
Are Google vehicle ads available in the UK?
They’re in open beta in the UK, as well as in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, according to Google’s help center. Google has to approve your account before you can switch them on, and features and rules may change before the full launch.
Which campaign type do Google vehicle ads use?
Performance Max, linked to a vehicle feed in Google Merchant Center. Google's setup guide also lists Shopping as an option.
Can I put my dealership logo on vehicle ad photos?
No. Google can disapprove images with logos, text, or watermarks placed on top of the photo. Branding in the background isn't banned, but Google says it can hurt performance.
Which vehicles can't be advertised with Google vehicle ads?
Google doesn't allow motorcycles, boats, vehicles that need a commercial license, vehicles with salvage or lien titles, or listings from brokers. Parts, accessories, tires, and services aren't eligible either. In the US, ATVs, UTVs, RVs and campers became eligible in May 2026.
Why was my Google vehicle ad disapproved?
Common causes include a price mismatch between your feed and your vehicle page, broken links, inaccurate mileage, and missing details.
How do I keep vehicle ads up to date when my stock changes?
Your feed must update every time a car sells or a price changes. Doing that by hand is slow, so it helps to automate it with a platform such as Phyron’s Inventory Ads.
Final thoughts
Google vehicle ads put your cars in front of buyers at the moment they’re ready to act, as long as your images and data play by Google’s rules. Get those right, keep your brand consistent across every channel, and every car in your showroom has a better chance of being the one a buyer clicks.
